Program Summary:

Western Pest Services’ canine program follows a highly regimented system to ensure that their canine teams are effective. The training program is coordinated by an outside consultant, Joe Nicholas, aka “Joe Nicks,” who is a 36 year veteran in canine scent detection. Joe Nicks has trained scent detecting canine teams for narcotics, arson and bomb sniffing activities. The training protocols that Western uses are based on decades of experience of their Master Trainer, Joe, combined with the science utilized by the company’s entomologists which is specific to bed bugs and bed bug sniffing dogs. This blend of the highest levels of experience and science creates one of the most effective teams of bed bug dogs available.

Speaker Bio:

Joseph Nicholas, Master Trainer - Joe Nick serves as Western’s Master Trainer and is responsible for overseeing all canine training and performance evaluations throughout the year. Joe brings over 30 years of canine experience with his background in law enforcement, corrections and missing persons at the local, state and federal levels. With Joe at the helm of training, Western’s bed bug dogs are trained using the same techniques and protocols as narcotics, arson and bomb-detection dogs.

Eric Glatsky, Central PA Service Supervisor - Eric is responsible for Western's client services program, often providing bedbug education classes to clients' staff. With over 20 years of experience, he maintains a hands on presence out in the field doing bedbug treatments, ranging from simple to challenging jobs.

Luke, Canine - Handler: Monique Laperriere - Luke is a Dachshund/Patterdale Terrier mix. At 15 months old, he was adopted by Western from the Connecticut Humane Society. His high-level energy made him the perfect candidate to become a bed bug dog. Working with a handler daily has helped Luke overcome his separation anxiety, and he is now an interactive, friendly and excited bed bug finder.

Monique Laperriere, Canine Handler - Monique joined the Western team in 2016. She is a published canine expert and an eight-time champion in multiple registries for canine showings. Her Western partner-in-crime, Luke, is a Dachshund / Patterdale Terrier mix. Fun fact about Luke: he always chases his tail while waiting for elevators!
